Get the best deal on a great dress shirt
Why they're a buy: With luxury apparel sales in a slump, many high-end shirtmakers are cutting prices. The best shirts are made of two-ply Egyptian or Sea Island cotton with 100-plus thread count; they have a collar that's sewn, not glued, and buttons that are mother-of-pearl, not plastic. The ready- to-wear shirts normally retail for about $150 to $250, but right now you can find one for as little as $90.
The strategy: Look across the pond; the shirt shops that started on London's famed Jermyn Street – such as Russell & Hodge and T.M. Lewin – are fighting a fierce price war. The R&H shirts at left currently sell at russellandhodge.com for 53 pounds (about $90), with shipping, vs. the usual 95 pounds.
Get more value: Pick a style that works for the office and evening: a tight poplin weave, not oxford, and point or spread collars instead of button-down, says Andy Gilchrist, founder of AskAndyAboutClothes.com, a site about men's apparel.
Usual cost: $150
The deal: $90
Treat yourself once! What a difference. I have had 2 of them for 5 years. Yes I wear them. They are not frid of falling apart like the $35.00 shirts after 2 years
Other people will notice and in some circles that is important.
The author of this article is a certified loon, less in touch with real people than George HW Bush was in the supermarket. While 95% of the country is trying to make ends meet, dealing with inflated prices on gasoline, college tuition, credit card interest, and irresponsible Democratic administration spending, she's writing about $90 dress shirts?
Come on, man…
There is nothing better fitting and looking than a nice good quality shirt. $90 is a bargain as they usually start at $135 for semi custom.
The name of the article is Get the best deal on a great dress shirt. Not Get the best deal on a good dress shirt.
Are the shirts more expensive than most spend? Of course. Are the shirts noticeably superior in quality? Of course. As in most cases, you get what you pay for.
It's no joke.
Its why the east and west coasts can't understand why there is so much anger in the middle of the country!
These people are out of touch to think this topic is relevant!
Wow! I just bought five dress shirts on sale at Macy's for $83 from brand names Tommy Hilfiger, Geoffrey Bean, Nautica, and Calvin Klein. Granted I probably don't know quality when I see it, at 18% of the cost I will take my chances. My wife would kill me if I had spent $450 for five dress shirts!
I don't know what this woman is talking about. TM Lewin has an ongoing promotion where they do four shorts for GBP100, about US$160 at the current exchange. Add shipping to the US for about $15 (free returns shipping!), and you've got four incredible shirts for under $44 each. And trust me, they put almost all popular designer name shirts to shame.
LOL! I agree. This article is so out of touch with the average reader's lifestyle. For $90, one can get two dress shirts and some nice slacks at Target.
Go to TJMaxx or Marshalls and buy high end dress shirts for anywhere between $15-$40 that will probably outlast your job three folds!
To be fair, there are plenty of people that buy $100+ shirts. They are definitely nicer than cheaper shirts and do make a difference in the office. I feel much better when I wear a nicer shirt. It's worth it for me than buying two $50 shirts that I'm just okay with.
How about a JC Penny dress shirt for $35? Get real. Maybe you buy $90 shirts, but the average reader doesn't, especially in these economic times.

I've placed an order on russellandhodge almost 2 months ago and have yet to receive my shirt nor a reply to my two emails requesting an update.
